Bräcken is the Old Norse word for “fern.” Resembling snow-dusted ferns that grow wild in the coniferous woodlands of the Pacific Coast in my home state of Washington, this trapper-style hat features a simple but gorgeous cable. An easy-to-memorize 10-stitch cable pattern is worked in super bulky yarn for instant satisfaction. Earflaps and long ties are added for additional warmth for long winter walks. The cable pattern works up fast and repeats itself every five rounds. This is the perfect project for travel-knitting or a cozy movie night by the fire. This pattern is charted and includes written instructions.
CONSTRUCTION
The Bräcken Frost Hat is worked in the round from the brim up. The earflaps are picked up from the cast-on stitches and worked in garter stitch. Long I-cords are worked for tying the hat securely beneath your chin. The pattern is written in one size that will fit a wide range of teen and adult heads.
Helpful tip: To maximize the yardage in your super bulky skein, when the hat is finished and before working the earflaps, weigh the yarn you have remaining. Cut that amount in half. Work your first earflap including the I-cord tie. You’ll then have a better idea of how long you can work the
I-cord tie for the second earflap.
