This design evolved after watching the BBC Mini Series, Poldark. While there is a lack of dreamy knitwear on the show, I was inspired more by the beautiful song that Demelza sings while visiting Elizabeth and Francis at Christmas time.

I knit the sample in Malabrigo, an absolutely scrumptious merino wool that offers a wide range of bright, saturated tones.

I chose this particular colorway mainly because it reminded me of Demelza’s dress, in fact, many of her dresses on the show. She does not come from great means, but the rich color of her Christmas dress, along with her bright, red locks just demand attention. As does this shawl!

The design is simple, yet whimsical. Bold, yet innocent. A happy marriage of pretty little details and practical application.

The increases of the shawl are cleverly incorporated in yarn overs that hug the center cable. This would be a great project for learning simple increasing and for exploring picots and eyelet lace. And if you you’re new to cables, this is a cinch!

As I described above, the Malabrigo yarn that I designed this pattern in practically speaks for itself. And oh what a beautiful voice it has!

If you haven’t experienced this yarn before, imagine sitting with a magical bunny in your lap. With the softest, fluffiest fur you’ve ever touched. And then imagine an even softer, fluffier. more magical fiber. There. Now you got it!

  • Laura C. says:

I enjoy knitting with merino wool blended with a little bit of silk, it feels so smooth when knitting, and creates a nice finished project. I’m thinking of some Cascade Heritage Silk Paints (I think 15% silk) that I really enjoyed knitting a while ago.

  • merino yarn for me esp Cascade, alpaca, love to work with fingering yarn most of the time, and I played with cotton thread as well. Recently I discovered that the stylecraft special dk is very soft and finger friendly considering it is just acrylic yarn.

  • Lovely shawl , thanks , malabrogo rios is a fave of mine

  • Esther Sprinkle says:

Wool is by far my favorite fiber to knit with, and I prefer non-superwash. I love wool in all it’s wooly glory…soft and sweet (as in Malabrigo Merino Worsted), squishy with a nice spin and twist, rustic and nubby, slightly thick and thin singles, self-striping (as in Noro), wool in all the various weights available, and wool nicely blended with silk and/or alpaca and other nice things. So, I think you get my drift… I love wool!

Thank you for sharing this lovely shawlette, and the colour you chose is yummy! I enjoy knitting with wools, wool-blends, as well as alpaca…the choice depends on the project and the person for whom I’m making an item. I’m allergic to angora and mohair, so I’ve never tried those.

  • jardinrouge says:

I’ve tried some alpaca which was soft and easy to work with. Would love to try some other yarns. Looking forward to making your beautiful pattern!

    Wool/silk blends are like buttah.

  • Connie K. says:

Merino for me – I love the softness of this wool!

  • Alicia says:

I’m a huge fan of alpaca, but because I live in a southern, warm-most-of-the-year climate, I don’t get to wear or create as much as I’d like. So I’d have to add some cotton & linen mixtures. Hands down, for color choices though, I’m Mallobrigo & Madeline Tosh. They’re sigh worthy. Thanks so much for the great pattern! Being a HUGE fan of Poldar, the name caught my eye right away, while the beautiful design made my heart flutter.

  • One of my favourite fibres is a 50% wool/silk blend. I’m also fond of bamboo, Nurturing Fibres eco-fusion, and have recently discovered alpaca lace.

  • Linda says:

I love any and all types of yarn. Each one has its own special project that I just have to find to bring out the best qualities of that yarn. Fabric ribbon to make ruffled scarfs or even a ruffled edge to a skirt or bag. Thread to make crochet bags especially irish crochet. Luxurious cashmere, silk, alpaca, mohair, qiviut (musk ox), merino and mink or blends for those projects that will be against your skin or around your neck. Acrylic yarns for ulitarian purposes like project bags or to use as practice projects before using your more expensive yarns. In other words I am a yarn-a-holic and proud of it. I have more yarn than I could ever use in a year but as soon as I walk past a shop that has some balls of wool on display I have to look and I think … hmmmm…. I have the perfect project for you. You’re coming home with me…..

She has a variety of lines and my favorite is her Tiny Dancer Line which is a 90% merino, 10% nylon. Stitch definition, drape and the colors she creates are just amazing on this.

  • Kara Larson says:

    Merino superwash!

  • Sara Williamson says:

It’s not so much the fiber for me, but the ply. I love single ply yarn– Tosh Merino Light, Malabrigo Lace, Lamb’s Pride, Dream in Color Jilly, Great Adirondack Reggae Silk…all single ply yarns and I love each of them.

  • Merino ~ merino/silk blend ~ love your pattern, thanks so much for sharing!

  • Diane says:

  • ktsmurf says:

I also love Merino and Merino blends, with cashmere and with silk. However, I prefer the non-superwash treated wool. Alpaca is a close second.

  • mbiswell says:

  • Kerry (beluke on Rav) says:

I love using wools that are blending with silk for sheen and bamboo for drape ….. mmmmmmmm

I think my favorite fiber would be either cashmere, merino wool or alpaca. The cashmere is amazing, merino is great to work with and the alpaca is super warm and fuzzy. • Aini says:

Such a beautiful shawl and I love the color you made it with.
My favourite fiber to knit with is merino (and any blends with it). Call me crazy as I live in a sunny climate year-round but I don’t go for any warm-climate suitable yarns (cotton, linen, etc). Merino is it for me and its such a versatile, good-wearing yarn 🙂

I love any yarn that’s soft and smooth. I use mostly acrylic for affordability and ease of care, but when I like to splurge, I like wool, angora, alpaca, cotton and silk.

  • Cathy Plittman says:

I am retired and any wool more expensive than Patons I can not afford. Would welcome the opportunity to knit with a premium fiber.

  • Crystal says:

My favorite materials to work with right now are merino and BFL. If it’s a high twist sock yarn- even better. 🙂

  • Dorothy says:

My favorite yarn depends on the project I’m working on. I love bamboo for baby hats, cotton/linens for summer shawls, wool for mittens and winter goodies, etc. All yarns serve a purpose! I love your Demelza’s song shawlette, and hope to make one in the very near future!

  • Michelle Roy says:

What a generous giveaway! I prefer knitting with wool and wool blends, but really I have no aversion to any particular fiber. They’re all so important to our craft!

I’ve been on a bit of a sock kick lately, but I’m looking forward to layering with shawls and cardigans when the weather changes!

  • Janet says:

  • Jennie says:

Hard to choose a favorite, as it tends to be whatever I’m working with right then!

But I definitely enjoy mohair, in spite of being so difficult to take out when I make a mistake that needs fixing, and wool with silk is lovely to work with as well. I also appreciate merino wool. When I first began knitting and crocheting, all I knew about was acrylic. Slowly, I learned about blends with a tiny bit of wool. Now I search for the natural fibers for most of my projects.
