This design evolved after watching the BBC Mini Series, Poldark. While there is a lack of dreamy knitwear on the show, I was inspired more by the beautiful song that Demelza sings while visiting Elizabeth and Francis at Christmas time.
I knit the sample in Malabrigo, an absolutely scrumptious merino wool that offers a wide range of bright, saturated tones.
I chose this particular colorway mainly because it reminded me of Demelza’s dress, in fact, many of her dresses on the show. She does not come from great means, but the rich color of her Christmas dress, along with her bright, red locks just demand attention. As does this shawl!
The design is simple, yet whimsical. Bold, yet innocent. A happy marriage of pretty little details and practical application.
The increases of the shawl are cleverly incorporated in yarn overs that hug the center cable. This would be a great project for learning simple increasing and for exploring picots and eyelet lace. And if you you’re new to cables, this is a cinch!
As I described above, the Malabrigo yarn that I designed this pattern in practically speaks for itself. And oh what a beautiful voice it has!
If you haven’t experienced this yarn before, imagine sitting with a magical bunny in your lap. With the softest, fluffiest fur you’ve ever touched. And then imagine an even softer, fluffier. more magical fiber. There. Now you got it!
For this shawlette, you’ll need TWO hanks of Malabrigo Worsted.
