Over the Sea to Skye

Do you ever startย knitting something and your imagination just begins to run away from you? As this shawl design evolved from my brain out into the stitches, I found myself dreaming of the Scottish landscape. Rocky shoals, craggy hills and windswept dunes.

Queue the music.

You may be familiar with this beautiful piece already, wether you remember playing it in band in your school days or at the beginning of a very popular series based on the romantic story of a lass trapped between time and two loves.

Now that I have you tightly entwined with me in this dream of mine, let’s talk about the actual shawl…

DSC_7005

It’s beauty is in its sheer simplicity. Easy to memorize increases and clean transitions between garter, lace mesh and eyelet lace. The shawl is an asymmetric shape that lends a generous width for wrapping. And the sweet little picots and eyelet edging add just enough romantic whimsy.

DSC_7019

The fiber that I chose is a perfect marriage of cool, summery Cotton with just a touch of warm and buttery soft Merino. The two come together in perfect harmony. giving you a lightweight and flowy fabric that is soft against the skin with just the right amount of warmth. You’ll find yourself wearing this year round.

I must visit her in her quaint tiny town in the middle of the countryside. I must visit her soon. It is very much a walking town, and I just found out today that I will soon become paralyzed because of a back problem. My sister’s in-laws are all knitters I have to wear this beautiful knit design to “represent” and show our family respects their traditions. “…over the bridge to Skye…” one of my favorite songs. Favorite is ” Highland Cathedral”, another Scottish song. My favorite dream destination is one I have been to twice and am just amazed by it while there. It’s the Orkney Islands in far Northern Scotland. It’s an ancient place with castle ruins and standing stones. There are no trees on the island and yet there are excavations of ancient people living there underground. Sheep are plentiful. The small villages are so picturesque. I visited a croft house and a lady taught me how to spin one afternoon. Love the shawl pattern and the memories of Scotland.

Scandinavia. The last time I was in Sweden I made a special detour to the Bohuslans Museum to be able to see their collection of original Bohus knitwear. They have them hanging on a clothes rail so you can (carefully) leaf through them and see the workmanship and art up close.

Conspicuously absent from the rail though was Wild Apples, which is a particular favorite of mine, and which is advertised as being part of the collection. I asked, and found a picture to show, and all the staff ran around looking for it, because they all recognized it.

It turns out it was being display in the glass units that formed the wall between the museum and its cafeteria (which has hearty, delicious food). The highlight of my visit and definitely worth the effort.
